Ritual: Garment and Performance

This piece was an exploration of merging garment making with performance.  The garment shown contains a pouch within the skirt that held the “mass” during the performance, until it was removed by a second figure, placed into the gold grate, and taken away.

Conceptually, I am primarily fueled by my experience being raised in a religious environment.  I have a keen interest in garments and objects that suggest ceremonial or ritualistic usage.  It is critical that I make pieces like this one to process what it means to me to have broken away from these religious roots.

Below is a link to a low-resolution video showing this piece in action.  The video aspect of this piece is not finished in my mind, but the clip available gives a good idea of my intentions.

i like the non-functionality of your garment, it relates not only to ritualistic garments but also to the fashion world in its non-practical aspects. the sleeves are especially bizarre and beautiful! your video is very mysterious. could you explain more what the “mass” symbolizes?
