Winter 2010 Jury

Hye Yeon Nam, recipient of the Creative Divergents Summer 2010 Award for Tongue Music: The Sound of a Kiss, is a digital media artist working on audio/video/robotic installation. She foregrounds the complexity of social relationships by making the familiar strange, and interpreting everyday behaviors in unexpected ways. Hye Yeon’s art has been showcased in Smithsonian Institute in Washington (2011-2012), Times Square, the art gallery Eyebeam and The Tank, the conflux, the D.U.M.B.O. Art Festival in New York, SIGGRAPH (2008, 2010), CHI (2010), NIME (2010), the Lab in San Francisco, and several festivals in China, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Australia, Denmark, and Switzerland. Her work has been broadcast on the Discovery Channel (Canada), and published in Wired, Leonardo Journal, and Makezine, among other publications. http://www.hynam.org
Travis Lee Street: I am an independent curator, events coordinator and editor of [^]LAND magazine/blog (an online arts&music social media website) as well as the Director of [^]LAND events. From 2008 I was the Director of the Seoul Art Collective; a non-profit artist PR organization located in Seoul where I curated exhibitions and managed artist portfolios. Last month I organized one of the largest independent live arts events at the A Foundation, Liverpool entitled WRONG LOVE. I am currently working with the Korean Cultural Center in London as the project coordinator of the 1st International Pan-Asian Pavilion at the Liverpool Biennial 2010. http://www.comeintoland.com
Gabriela Vainsencher: I’ve been a working artist in New York since 2005. My practice has led me to seek alternative modes of presentation within the accepted institutions of fine art. My work, be it drawing that impersonates a movie, video that is a painting come to life, or museum audio guides that tell you no facts, put the human element more strongly into the experience of looking at art, making the viewer more aware of his or her presence in the space, as well as that of the artist, or more correctly, the traces the artist leaves behind. In 2009 I was Williams College’s artist-in-residence, where I taught about humor in contemporary art and explored non- illustrative modes of response to short fiction. Dawn Graham is the founder of Creative Divergents, an advocate, and an artist. Believing strongly in the importance of awareness and building understanding through open communication, the main purpose underlying much of Dawn’s work is to foster thought and dialogue. Dawn also gets a kick out of people writing about themselves in third person and wonders if anyone knows how to do so without using gendered pronouns and simultaneously not sounding awkward. http://dawngraham.com

Summer 2010 Jury

Elaine A. King is a Professor, at Carnegie Mellon University teaching the History of Art/Theory/Museum Studies. Her Ph.D. is from Northwestern University in Theory and History of Art. American University selected Elaine A. King to be the Distinguished Art Historian in Residence for the International Program in Corciano, Italy for the Fall 2006 term. Dr. King holds a joint Masters Degree in Art History and Public Policy, from Northern Illinois University and her B.S. was awarded from Northern Illinois University in Art History and American History.
Beth A. Steffel is an Assistant Professor of Art (Design) at California State University, San Bernardino and has taught at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, and the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. She works as both an award-winning designer as founder and principal of Beth A. Steffel Design, Los Angeles, California, and fine artist with an international client base and national exhibition record.

Dawn Graham is the founder of Creative Divergents. Some of Dawn’s other undertakings include Break the Silence Project, which strives to address issues surrounding sexual violence through creative means, and camera on a string, which is part social experiment, part consideration of people and place. Currently, Dawn is in the exciting early stages of a long term collaborative project that explores queer identities.

    June 15, 2012: Submissions must be received by 11:59pm EST. You are strongly encouraged to submit sooner rather than later, as your work will have more time to receive exposure, ratings, and comments. Any received after this time will be entered into the next showcase.

    July 5, 2012: Award recipient will be notified via email and announced on Creative Divergents site.
