This series of my work explores the evolution of icons and mythologies within American culture that are affected by the emersion of new technologies. As a kid who grew up with low-resolution videogames, the transitory lifespan and aesthetic attached to this technology fascinates me. The colorful, blocky, iconic graphics floating in virtual space are tied to a very specific moment in my personal history. Painted canvas evokes tradition and high culture. The 8-Bit series interweaves the mediums of digital 8-bit aesthetic with the tradition of paint on canvas. Each image explores either a current or traditional mythology. There are currently seven, 30” x 30” images in the series.

Manage a trois: Yellow, Red, And Blue

The following 3 works are depicting different parts of the female form.

Each piece is untitled #1, #2, and #3. Reflecting the concept that these female forms are merely numbers, de humanized, just body parts for the viewing pleasure of others.

Each piece is a bold colourful, pop arty, almost cartoon like composition. The mixed media portion within the female form was designed using Xerox transfers from the adult want ad section of a local newspaper.

The acknowledgement of the body form being beautiful in its mere essence has in itself had some contradictory outcomes for the female form.

The obsessive drive in our society to sexualize women into merely sexual beings, body parts, without cerebral and emotional essence is prevalent in every day life.
These works aid in reinforcing this concept for in them they are both sexually suggestive and exploitive.

I hope this work, although appearing light and frivolous, will stimulate thought and conversation about the insidious way women’s sexualized/naked or partial naked bodies are depicted. Often used for mere visual pleasure, selling of commodities, or selling of themselves.

In Transcendessence, I am exploring the role of women in this modern age. The unending conflict that exists within every woman; the ability of the woman to transcend space and time- to suspend them- while she attempts to alter her own spiritual being into what this world expects of her, and yet, what she (fundamentally) needs to be. A fantasy world. I portray the figure as a somewhat ghostly image, in an effort to convey the translucidity of the female spirit. Perhaps indicative of my own insecurities, though unfortunately relevant for all women, this current series of my work intends to show strength of spirit and will; the beautiful power within all women to rise above all and shine luminescently in the face of any adversity. However, please don’t misunderstand. I could just as easily paint about the conflicts within men, religions, races… The focus, here, is women because I am a woman. A woman who has survived a great many hardships, and a woman with a great sense of spirit. This, like all of my paintings, is personal. I have so much love for all of humanity.
We all have conflict.
We all have stories to tell.
These are just mine.” -René Romero Schuler

These photographs are from a portfolio of very common and even mundane objects. I hope to create interest in such objects by looking at them through a “different set of eyes”. I visualize them through uneven transparent glass surfaces, or photograph their reflections from a variety of uneven surfaces. I use glass wall construction blocks, odd shaped Christmas Balls, mirror surfaces of reflectors, spoons, windows and just about any reflective or transparent surface which can create a new and interesting rendition of a common theme. My subjects are common household items, boring suburban streets, telephone poles, flowers etc. – subjects we encounter daily without giving them a second glance. To paraphrase Wm. Shakespeare’s Hamlet – “to hold as ’twere, the Mirror up to Nature” – I try to create an artistic experience and the sense of altered reality – by looking at very traditional objects in an untraditional way.
