The Faceless project started from the need to tell the human body and the huge communicative potential that it brings; as the title says, the idea is acting by subtraction, revealing the absence of the face as the basis for an investigation of the movement.

The face, with its wealth of expression and the ability to attract, by itself, the attention of the viewer, is thus concealed; the body remains. This “interference” creates alienating figures. Faceless is intended also as a reflection on the different identities that the body assumes in relation to the natural and cultural environment in which it operates. The center of the project is, in a nutshell, the conflict generated by the juxtaposition of the body to the face, hidden-replaced from time to time by simulacra of our lives: wigs, masks, clothes…

The project is divided into more or less short series of photographs; until now only have been produced five works on the subject: Feminea, Black Russian, Siren’s Dream, Countryland and Swamp Women.

Yesterday I finished the installation of a project I’ve been working on all summer. “Prayer” is a series of 15 ten foot hanging banners that I created by distressing sheer fabric with coffee and ink, then photocopying some very personal journal entries onto the fabric. I then screenprinted a vortex shape in the middle of each “page”. I was able to get one more element of depth by adding a third layer of sheer fabric that I inserted thin pieces of wire into. The wire can be manipulated to create an interesting dimension.

The inspiration for this piece comes from the journal entries.

When at a gallery, people always say “I don’t get this?” or “What is the artist trying to say?” Why is it that we feel we have to know the intention or meaning of something in order to distinguish our like for it? Art should be for all and for all to understand. However the understanding of art should stem from you; your memories, your experiences or merely your own personal taste.

Leonardo da Vinci said that “although nature commences with reason and ends with experience, it is necessary for us to do the opposite; that is, to commence with experience and from this proceed to investigate the reason.” For me, I do just that – live life to experience and through my art, investigate the reason. I attempt through contrast, color, texture and strokes to convey through my experiencing eye, how all aspects of the world gets intertwined in our daily lives. Capturing a basis within cultures, places, and nature, I strive to extract an essence or character in the sights we may neglect, ignore or deem as insignificant in hope to render them beautiful.

Art I believe, can heighten our experiences, past or present and bring out emotions which help in a realization towards our reasoning’s. Therefore in my work, I intend to present to my viewers a different perspective of looking at every day sights the way I appreciate them. However, what I as the artist intends, isn’t what’s important. What is however, is that you find some quality, good or bad, that sparks your attention hinged simply on; you.

Sublime Affliction is a series of wearable amuletic objects based on a visual vocabulary of cellular pathology. The work addresses the psychological aspects of illness and serves as coping mechanisms for medical diagnoses and treatment. The objects are placed on the body over the site of illness and reference disease through decorative patterning and material choices. Works use form, patterning and materials creating tactile amuletic pieces. The inherent nature of jewelry lends itself to discussion of the interplay between public and private in Sublime Affliction.
Growth I and II, address disease in action. These two pieces spread across the surface of the skin unevenly and unpredictably. The interplay of layers between the piece and the healthy skin underneath is more developed in this piece with dark rims framing the openings and volume of the elements highlighting the depth and layering as if looking through multiple images of layers of tissue. The shadows cast by the piece create their own pattern across the surface of the skin, continuing the spreading. The depressions and ridges in the forms bring a greater level of visual depth to the piece by creating an overlapping patterning in addition to the dimensionality of the elements. The individual elements that make up the piece are not seen singularly but as a mass.
