<p>I have always had a fascination with paper. My grandfather was a lumberjack and my hometown&#8217;s economy was completely dependent on two paper mills. As a child I hated that little town. It smelled bad and was over two hours away from civilization. It wasn&#8217;t until much later I appreciated my upbringing for its simplicity. It gave me my creativity and a deep appreciation for nature.</p>
<p>My fine art work is my attempt to reconcile that passion for nature with my other passion: fashion. These two ideas seem at odds but both have a level of craftsmanship and detail that isn&#8217;t found elsewhere. It&#8217;s all about the process. I start with a piece of handmade paper. Each piece is unique and will handle ink differently. Keeping that in mind, I choose an image that will compliment the paper. My goal is to have both paper and image become one single piece of art. Neither could exist without the other. I use the natural texture of the paper to distort the image and then add brush strokes, ink splatters, cup stains, ect. to further merge paper and image. All of this work is printed digitally, using a standard pigment ink printer. The result is a truly unique print.</p>

<a href="http://creativedivergents.com/wp-content/gallery/09w001benoitmaubrey/image1.jpg" title="Benoît Maubrey is the director of DIE AUDIO GRUPPE a Berlin-based art group that build and perform with electronic clothes. Basically these are electro-acoustic clothes and dresses (equipped with amplifiers and loudspeakers) that make sounds by interacting thematically and acoustically with their environment. In the more recent AUDIO PEACOCKS project performers wear electroacoustic instruments shaped into a peacock’s fan-like plumage that is highly directional -- projecting the sound into a space like an oversized radar dish. Much in the same way that the courtyard peacock &quot;strutts his stuff“ in front of a pea-hen and imposes with his awesome cry, so does the Audio Peacock stalk his architectural domain -- using sound as a scalpel that cuts through air and sculpts it. An Audio Peacock can either amplify and alter its own voice or electronic instruments using a microphone, sampler, and filters (loop + pitch), play pre-recorded sounds, or receive sounds via transmitter/receiver. However this is not a permanent performance-event, it is a sound installation that occurrs over a period of time: much like a peacock inhabits a courtyard or farmland -- this animal marks his terrain and metamorphasizes it, letting out its calls at odd moments when we dont expect them. As VIDEO PEACOCK (wearing white plexiglass &quot;skins“) these electroacoustic birds patrol a more limited space and darkened environment. Their audio costumes double as mobile projection screens: whenever their paths intersect the light of a video projector the costumes metamorphasize into multi-colored screens. Colorful visualizations (movies, pictures, internet blogs, computer-enhanced images and closed circuit camera views) are &quot;beamed“ onto them as they play their sounds. As a multi-phonic installation the parcours of these &quot;cyber-birds“ is choreographed vis-a-vis to the emplacement of the projectors in the architectural space. Die Audio Gruppe‘s work is essentially site-specific. Often the electronics is adapted into entirely new &quot;Audio Uniforms&quot; or &quot;sonic costumes&quot; that reflect local customs , themes, or traditions (AUDIO GEISHA/Japan, AUDIO CYCLISTS/France, AUDIO HANBOK/Korea, AUDIO GUARDS/ Oslo...). AUDIO BALLERINAS, VIDEO PEACOCKS and other Electroacoustic Clothing Benoît Maubrey is the director of DIE AUDIO GRUPPE a Berlin-based art group that build and perform with electronic clothes. Basically these are electro-acoustic clothes and dresses (equipped with amplifiers and loudspeakers) that make sounds by interacting thematically and acoustically with their environment. For example the AUDIO BALLERINAS use -- among other electronic instruments-- light sensors that enable them to produce sounds through the interaction of their movements and the surrounding light (PEEPER choreography). Via movement sensors they can also trigger electronic sounds that are subsequently choreographed --or &quot;orchestrated&quot;-- into musical compositions as an &quot;audio ballet &quot; (YAMAHA choreography). A variety of other electronic instruments (mini-computers, samplers, contact microphones, cassette and MP3 players, and radio receivers) allow them to work with the sounds, surfaces, and topographies of the space around them in a variety of solo or group choreographies." class="shutterset_set_3" rel="lightbox[174]">

<p>PHONIC BODIES and CHOREOGRAPHED SOUNDS<br />
Performances with electro-acoustic clothes</p>
<p>My decision in the early 1980s to stop working with pigments and canvas came from a desire to interact directly with public spaces. By building loudspeakers into clothes I could intervene in any given environment in a temporary and cost-efficient way: loudspeakers and circuitboards are cheap and can be salvaged from surplus electronics and disguarded toys. My artistic tools are electroacoustic clothes: costumes and suits that are equipped with loudspeakers and amplifying systems that allow the individual wearers to react acoustically to their environment. Basically each person wears one part of a composition: the position of the individual &#8220;audio actors&#8221; and their movement within a space produces the final composition. The orchestration of the mobile sounds creates the final musical score (see AUDIO CLOTHES 1983-85). Series of different &#8220;audio clothes &#8221; are developed in regards to a particular theme or site as &#8220;Audio Uniforms&#8221; (see AUDIO STEELWORKERS, AUDIO VACUUM CLEANERS, GUITAR MONKEYS, AUDIO CYCLISTS)  or in relation to a local culture (see AUDIO GEISHAS/ Japan, AUDIO JEANS/ USA, AUDIO HANBOK/Korea.</p>
<p>In 1989 the AUDIO BALLERINAS started using a variety of electronic instruments in order to personally interact with their environment. Among others, light sensors that enabled them to produce sounds through the interaction of their movements and the surrounding light and movement sensors with which they could individually trigger electronic sounds. These were then collectively choreographed into &#8220;audio ballets&#8221;. A variety of other electronic instruments  (samplers, contact microphones, and radio receivers) allowed them also to work with the sounds, surfaces, topographies and electromagnetic waves of the space around them.</p>
<p>The AUDIO PEACOCKS (since 2003) use plexiglass costumes shaped into a peacock’s fan-like plumage. They are equipped with 16 loudspeakers and 150 watts power. The &#8220;audio-plumage&#8221; is highly directional and functions like an electroacoustic radar dish. An Audio Peacock can either amplify its own electronic instruments and /or voice using a microphone and sampler, or receive sounds from outside sources via transmitter/receiver and disseminate them in a space by orienting his high-tech &#8220;plumage&#8221;.</p>
<p>VIDEO PEACOCK is the most recent performance project from Benoit Maubrey. An Audio Peacock costume out of white plexiglass is used as a mobile projection screen. This is an audio-visual performance where the electro-acoustic quality of an Audio Peacock is visually enhanced via a video projector. Video-taped images can be projected simultaneously to the sounds on the costume. In a more spectacular sense the Peacock&#8217;s own filmed image can be projected live onto itself in a form of &#8220;video-feedback&#8221;. The self-produced voice and sounds can also be used to manipulate the images projected onto the costume.</p>
