“The Birthday Room” was created as an instillation, or diorama, of an over the top Birthday party. It was installed in a small room in the Flying Leap Gallery. With only two small doorways to peer into the instillation space creating a feeling of looking into a very separate place/ environment.
On February 5th 2010, there was a one time improvisational performance in the space, a 30th Birthday Party. The performers acted out an exaggerated mock party in the space and became a part of the instillation. The performance was intended to be watched for any length of time, the performers were meant to act as part of a moving diorama. The performance was projected on an outer wall of the gallery so that there was more access to the event beyond looking through the doorways.
In addition, the night of the performance was the actual 30th Birthday of the artist, who was “acting” as the Birthday Girl, and the performers were some of her real friends, so there was a grain of truth in the mock performance.
All presents and greeting cards were created by the artist or outside artists, so the performers had no knowledge of what they were giving the Birthday Girl during the performance.
