In a course entitled “The Erotic as Power”, I had to prove the power of my work with something called “The Wet Test”. It was a test of involuntary reactions; the most powerful pieces brought out pink cheeks and mass fidgeting in the lecture hall. A memorable lesson, I must admit, and one I carry with me to this day. Whatever I make, it must pass the same test. If the heart beats faster, if the blood starts to rush or the fingers twitch with a need to touch — if any of these symptoms of desire are ignited, then I am satisfied. Quite frankly, if it does not get a reaction, why bother?
